What is 925 silver?
Silver itself is very soft, too soft to make jewelry from. To make the silver a little harder, small amounts of other metals are added, usually copper. By mixing the silver with a different metal, a different kind of alloy is created, sterling silver is best known herein, it consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal.
Why does silver discolour?
Many people think that the quality of the silver is not good when discoloration occurs. This is not the case, it is a natural process of silver. When wearing silver jewelry, but also when not wearing it, the silver can discolor. It then becomes darker, greenish or dull. This can be due to, among other things, the acidity of your skin. Unfortunately, you cannot prevent this process, but you can clean the silver with, for example, a silver cleaning cloth.
How do I maintain my silver jewelry?
To keep your jewelry beautiful for as long as possible, we recommend:
- to take your jewelry off during heavy work, cleaning, exercising, showering and sleeping. During sports, for example, you perspire more so that discoloration can be promoted.
- to regularly polish your jewelry with a silver polishing cloth. Regular brushing can prevent dullness and attack.
- to store your jewelry in air and light-free jewelry box.
- to prevent your jewelry from coming into contact with chemicals.
Are your jewelry nevertheless discoloring and do they start to look dull? Then immerse them in silver polish. Let the liquid soak in and then rinse it thoroughly under the tap. Finally, dry your jewelry with a dry cloth. This is only possible with 925 silver, if you do this with a piece of jewelry with a rhodium, gold or rosé plating then you can also polish the plating off.
